Cheerful, buttery vanilla sugar cookies that hold their shape and are perfect for decorating.
Ingredients

- 1 cup butter, room temperature
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- Powdered sugar for icing
- Food coloring (optional)
Instructions
- Cream the butter and sugar until light.
- Mix in the egg and vanilla.
- Add the dry ingredients and mix on low speed.
- Chill the dough for at least 1 hour.
- Roll out the dough to about a quarter inch thickness.
- Cut shapes and chill again for 10 minutes if in a warm kitchen.
- Bake until pale and set.
- Let cookies cool fully before icing.
Notes
Chilling the dough and cut shapes helps prevent spreading. Enjoy decorating with icing and sprinkles!
