Description

A comforting dish of Salisbury steak smothered in rich onion gravy, perfect for chilly nights and family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
  • 1 tablespoon water (optional, for thickening)

Instructions

  1. Mix the patties: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, half of the chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Use your hands or a spoon to mix until everything is well combined. Shape this mixture into evenly sized patties, about 1 inch thick.
  2. Brown the patties: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Carefully add the patties to the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are nicely browned. Once done, remove them from the skillet and set aside on a plate.
  3. Cook the onions: In the same skillet, add the remaining chopped onions. Cook for about 3-5 minutes, or until they are soft and lightly caramelized. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking or burning.
  4. Create the gravy: Pour in the beef broth and bring to a gentle simmer, scraping the bottom of the skillet to loosen any tasty bits. Return the browned patties to the skillet, making sure they are covered with the broth and onions.
  5. Thicken (optional): If you prefer a thicker gravy, mix the cornstarch with water in a small bowl to create a slurry. Stir this into the simmering mixture in the skillet and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until the gravy has thickened to your liking. Remember to stir while adding to avoid lumps.
  6. Serve: Let everything simmer together for 10-15 minutes until the patties are cooked through, and the flavors meld beautifully. Serve hot over mashed potatoes or your favorite side, and enjoy the comforting embrace of this homestyle dish.

Notes

Opt for 80/20 ground beef for optimal flavor and juiciness. This dish can also be made with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
